An Interview With Marlene Thompson

Meet Marlene Thompson! She is joining us for our upcoming production of Sketches! Or It Didn’t Happen showing August 5th - August 14th at The Magnetic Theatre in Asheville, NC! We reached out to Marlene to tell us a bit about herself and how working on this production has been for her.

1. What about this show is comfortable to you? What takes you out of your comfort zone?

Writing and improvising on the fly, line memorizing.

2. Do you relate to any of your characters? Which one(s)? How similar / different are you?

Each character I wrote for myself have small parts of me in them. The ones I’m cast in, I try to relate on the most human level to them and respond honestly in the way I believe they would to the given situation.

3. What's your favorite line in the show? Why?

“You’re the one who sucks”—-because it wasn’t written and it’s delivered perfectly

4. Which sketch is your favorite?

Don’t make me choose a favorite child.

5. What is your favorite kind of cake?

Everything except vanilla on vanilla. Why is that a cake flavor?

6. How did you get into theatre / performing / writing?

I was an only child.

7. Do you prefer to be on stage or behind the scenes?

Stage, see above.

Biography

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Marlene Thompson is an improviser, a stand up and actor residing in Asheville, NC. She moved to the mountains in 2015 from Chicago, where she studied improv and sketch at the Second City Conservatory and iO Chicago. She’s a founding member of and performer with several local improv troupes and teaches with Asheville Improv Collective. She also produces the YouTube political comedy show, From the Ashes with Marlene Thompson. You can catch her all around town doing stand-up.
