An Interview With The Shorthand Job Playwright and Actor Jamie Knox

The Shorthand Job opens on February 18th, 2022! In this show, Callie and Omar are a successful, middle-aged couple that have been married for years. Only, they haven’t been merry in years. For the record, they used to be quite happy but somewhere along the line, they stopped listening to their better voices. Therapy and counseling proved ineffective. Desperate, they decide they have no choice but to open up their marriage to someone who may be just their type. But of course, they aren’t married to the idea.

We reached out to playwright and actor, Jamie Knox with a few questions about her and her experience working on this production.

1. What’s the best relationship advice you’ve ever been given or that you would like to give?

You can make your relationship whatever you want it to be. There's no rulebook.

2. Do you relate to your character? How similar / different are you?

I think a slightly younger me relates to Callie a bit more than I do now. I have struggled in the past with being heard or respected, but since entering my 40s that has changed. I am much more comfortable in my skin and more settled than she is, but she is definitely in my shadow.

3. What's your favorite line in your show? Why?

"I literally own you though" Because the line before it is, "you're so bossy".

4. What’s the weirdest experience you’ve ever had at work?

I once sent a woman and the wrong man into a couple's massage.

5. How did you get into theatre?

A traveling theatre group held auditions in my hometown for Pinnochio when I was 9.
