A Few Questions with Algorithm & Blues: A Dating Sketch Show Actor Daniel Moore

Algorithm & Blues: A Dating Sketch Show opens March 4th, 2022! This show will be an uproarious evening poking fun at the trials and tribulations of modern dating, featuring live music, bad date stories, and dancing Yentas!

We reached out to Daniel with a few questions about himself and his experience working on this production.

1. Do you relate to any of your characters or to any character in the show? How similar / different are you?

Not particularly, if I’m being honest. But I do LOVE that I get to use my sports announcer voice. I’m definitely not that loud or outgoing in reality, though we all know of some very real situations that require that sort of energetic performance. I love watching football (Pittsburgh Steelers if you’re curious, STEEL CURTAIN BABY!!) and I couldn’t begin to count the number of times in life that I’ve used the announcer voice just for fun. I mean, haven’t we all at some point?

2. What are the top 5 songs on your date night playlist?

Well that depends on what kind of date night I’m trying to have. There’s like “super casual” date night for when you’re just trying to like chill and vibe with each other’s music tastes. There’s the “high energy fun” kind of date where you want to stick with upbeat energetic music to keep you hyped. Then there’s the “romantic” night in, which for the sake of the question is the date night I’m going to answer for. That being said, my “romantic” night in playlist would be as follows:

Untitled by D’Angelo

I Wanna Know by Joe

All The Things Your Man Won’t Do by Joe

Crazy by K-Ci & JoJo

All My Life by K-Ci & JoJo

Freak Me by Silk

If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys

For You I Will by Monica

Anytime by Brian McKnight

Incomplete by Sisqo

Feel free to play them in whatever order works best for you and your date and I can all but guarantee some steamy romance is in store ;)

3. What's your favorite sketch comedy show / podcast / local group?

My absolutely favorite Podcast is not a comedy, strictly speaking, it’s StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson - “Where Science and Pop Culture Collide” - I’ve always been a huge science nerd. I love learning new things, in any field, because there’s just so much cool ass stuff out there to learn about. Unfortunately, science and scientific thinking have never had a great relationship with the mass public. This podcast, along with countless others, aim to make science fun and more accessible for everyone. Each episode features an outside expert on the chosen topic and is co-hosted by a comedian! My favorite comic co-hosts are Chuck Nice and Jordan Klemperer. That would have to be my favorite part about the podcast, the comedians are constantly asking questions and making comments like any other average joe, which truly makes it so much more hilarious and accessible. Check it out on Spotify, Patreon, and YouTube.

4. How is working with The Magnetic different from working with other theatres?

The Magnetic is such a wonderful place to work. The sense of camaraderie is pretty unique. There are a lot of theatres out in the world that operate based on a group vision, they encourage input, and they listen to everyones concerns and needs. These theatres do so in varying degrees of success, in my opinion, but I can safely say that I’ve never worked with a theatre that values and nurtures the voices and visions of their artists more than the Magnetic Theatre. I freaking love it here!

5. What's your favorite type of apple?

Granny Smith, hands down! It is the superior apple. Just throw in a little peanut butter or caramel! Oh man, my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

6. Do you have any upcoming projects that we should check out?

I actually do. Thank you so much for asking! In July of this year, I will be directing Sherwood: The Adventures Of Robin Hood at Parkway Playhouse in Burnsville, NC. I’m very excited for this project! It’s a big show with even bigger characters, it’s gonna be action packed, with lots of love and maybe some loss, who knows? You’ll have to come out and see it for yourself!! It will be showing at the end of July and the beginning of August.
