A Few Questions with Algorithm & Blues: A Dating Sketch Show Director Jason Phillips

Algorithm & Blues: A Dating Sketch Show opens March 4th, 2022! This show will be an uproarious evening poking fun at the trials and tribulations of modern dating, featuring live music, bad date stories, and dancing Yentas!

We reached out to Jason with a few questions about him and his experience working on this production.

1. Share your best or worst date experience!

I was on a first date at a movie theater and the usher came to speak to my date. He said he’d be right back (famous last words). He never reappeared and wasn’t in the theatre when I went to look. It was pre-cell phone so I actually didn’t hear from him until the next day. Apparently he didn’t have the money for the movie so he snuck in and got caught. Oddly enough, on our second date I had to hide him in my closet.

2. Do you relate to any of your characters or to any character in the show? How similar / different are you?

As a writer I relate to all of the characters I write in some way. I’m probably most like the well meaning but struggling spokemom in Grindr Jr. she’s just trying to do the right thing for her kid in strange times.

3. What's your favorite line in the show? Why?

FetLife, MetLife, Jake from State Farm because you can never have too much insurance when you’re dating.

4. What are the top 5 songs on your date night playlist?

Bottles and Cans - Angie Stone

Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen

Shadows in the Moonlight - Anne Murray

Get Lucky - Daft Punk

Sweetest Taboo - Sade

5. What's your favorite sketch comedy show / podcast / local group?

I still adore The Kids in the Hall. I can quote so many of their sketches.

6. How did you get into theatre?

My favorite thing to do when I was a kid was playing pretend. I got into theatre to really explore all of the different characters living inside me. I jumped at every opportunity to do it as I grew up.

7. What's your favorite type of apple?

Fuji baby
