A Few Questions with Algorithm & Blues: A Dating Sketch Show Actor Tippin

Algorithm & Blues: A Dating Sketch Show opens March 4th, 2022! This show will be an uproarious evening poking fun at the trials and tribulations of modern dating, featuring live music, bad date stories, and dancing Yentas!

We reached out to Tippin with a few questions about themselves and their experience working on this production.

1. Share your best or worst date experience!

I have very few of what I'd consider traditional "dates" and even fewer stand out as particularly great or awful.  In fact I'd say one of the most fun nights of my life was when a date had to cancel at the last minute, so I went to my regular watering hole and offered my spare concert ticket to anyone willing.  My friend Maime had never heard of Dan Deacon before but joined me 'cause she's adventurous like that, and we walked down to the Orange Peel and saw THE BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN.  It was spectacular, trippy, wildly interactive, playful, weird, and thoroughly exhilarating.  We danced our tuchuses off, made new friends-for-a-night, and forgot the entire rest of the world for a while.  If you ever get a chance to see Dan Deacon live, just go do it.  Even if you've never heard of him or don't care for crazy experimental music.  And if you can drag along an unsuspecting but up-for-anything friend, all the better!

2. Do you relate to any of your characters or to any character in the show? How similar / different are you?

Mabel in the Senior Games sketch.  She's described in the character list as jaded and bitter.  I read her as No BS and Sassy AF.  She's strong, bold, and goes for what she wants.  She's the old battle axe I aspire to be.

3. What are the top 5 songs on your date night playlist?

"Make it Up" by The Blow

"Dark Center of the Universe" by Modest Mouse

"Strange" by LP

"Language Barrier" by Mike Doughty

"Soulmate" by Lizzo

And if they don't run screaming in terror and confusion, we gon' be all right.  ;)

4. What's your favorite sketch comedy show / podcast / local group?

Call me a romantic, but there will never be anything like the glow of my first sketch comedy loves: Monty Python & Kids in the Hall.

5. What are your go-to first date (or date night) plans?

Dinner's great, trying someplace new.  Theatre, especially if it's weird, experimental, or provocative.  I'm totally the kind of person who'd take a first date to a fringey, avant garde performance and determine the future of the relationship based on their reaction.
