Court of the Grandchildren opens April 8, 2022! In this production, it’s 2051, the older generation that accelerated climate change is being brought to trial. And climate activist Lily thinks she has it all figured out. Until she meets her great uncle, David, who changes her perspective completely. He’s a man from today. She’s a woman from tomorrow. How will she judge him?
We reached out to actor Emily Tucker to find out more about her and her experience working on this production.
1. What do you imagine 2051 will be like compared to how it's portrayed in the script?
I am honestly too afraid to even think about that given the current state of the world, what with the climate crisis and pending societal downfall.
2. Do you relate to your character or to any character in the show? How similar / different are you?
My character has a very defined sense of self. She has a wealth of intelligence and is guided by it. She definitely the type to go into everything with her mind and not too much emotional entanglement.
3. What are the top 5 songs on your current "opening night" playlist?
All in My Head (Flex) - Fifth Harmony (feat. Fetty Wap)
Applause - Lady Gaga
Party Up - DMX
Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
The Show Must Go On - Queen
4. Do you have any rituals you follow when rehearsing for or performing in a show?
I spend rehearsal thinking of how my character will look, sound, move, etc so that I am able to really get into the proper space for them. Then on performance nights I drink some extra coffee, listen to a playlist that gets my energy up and get ready to be someone else.
5. Do you love or hate AI and "technology"? Why?
I have a love/hate with technology. I have to use it all day, every day for work and I do use it for fun (mindless scrolling). I really try to get away from it only to find myself sucked back into the vortex of dog videos on Instagram.
6. How did you get into theatre?
I started when I was very young and loved the "make believe" aspect and the attention I would get. As I got older I fell even more in love with the feeling of inhabiting a different world with roles I played. As an actor you get to live endless amounts of lives.
7. How is working with The Magnetic different from working with other theatres?
Working at the Magnetic has given me the opportunity to do more works of local authors, which I love. It's always great to be reminded how ridiculously talented our community is.
8. Have you done any research or read any books / listened to any interesting podcasts related to the play's subject matter that you'd recommend?
Emergence Magazine Podcast
TILClimate
9. Do you have any upcoming projects that we should check out?
Stay Tuned. I'm getting back into a great stride post Covid and am not ready to slow down
