A Few Questions with The Frankenstein Rubrics Actor Evan Eckstrom

The Frankenstein Rubrics is showing at The Magnetic Theatre October 7-22! We reached out to Evan Eckstrom to find out more about him and his experience working on this production.

Tell us, in your own words, what this show is about!

This show so far to me is a dive into the realm of metaphysical examination of a piece of literature that evolved into pop culture canon. A living breathing piece of human history and storytelling that goes beyond the girl in the cabin writing it down one winter in 1818.

Do you relate to your character or to any character in the show? How similar / different are you?

I share some qualities with Percey Shelley. Daydreaming and scrawling poetic on the vistas I find up the Appalachian Mountains.

What's your favorite line in the show? Why?

"There are a thousand truths in a day and we have narrowed our vision to a handful." I hold dear the ephemera experienced and lost continually as we burn through daylight and wipe the eraser of sleep across our mind's eye.

What is a song you feel represents this show?

Iron Man - Black Sabbath

Do you have any rituals you follow when rehearsing for or performing in a show?

I try to always lead with deep breaths to sink into every rehearsal period and line review at home.

How did you get into theatre?

3rd and 4th grade in my hometown hosted an All-Star Revue where a bunch of kids rehearsed Broadway show tunes and performed them with costumes and choreography on the high school's stage. It was all over for me following that thrill! Connection with live audience is a lifeline for me at this point.

How is working with The Magnetic different from working with other theatres?

We get paid! lol, but really I do feel appreciated as a member of the company. Folks seem to really care about one another, which hasn't always been the case in places I've worked.

Have you done any research or read any books / listened to any interesting podcasts related to the play's subject matter that you'd recommend?

Shelley's Frankenstein is certainly a top notch book! I got to help craft a devised Guignol horror piece centered around the story in which I played The Creature.

Do you have any upcoming projects that we should check out?

I'm currently performing in Jamie Knox's show Beautiful Cages at The Magnetic through most of September!
