We are introducing our new Play Reading Club. Think of it like a brunch happy hour! Every Sunday at 11 AM, beginning July 12th, we will raise our mimosas to some of the most brunch worthy plays of contemporary theatre. We reached out to our Play Reading Club host, Wolfe Lanier, about this new venture!
1. What is Play Reading Club?
The Play Reading Club is a chance to explore new works, enjoy the company of others, and have fun reading in character. Because the opportunity to be on stage isn’t available, we allow readings to bring some of those creative juices to life.
2. What play are you reading this month and why was it chosen?
The two plays of July are The Drunken City by Adam Bock and (STILL SEARCHING)
This is a light-hearted play with poignant messages. It certainly fits a vibe of brunch while exploring topics worthy of discussion.
3. What made you interested in hosting The Magnetic Theatre’s play reading club?
Selfishly enough, this gives me an opportunity to read more plays! As an actor, one of the best things we can do is keep growing our knowledge. This opportunity is brilliant for personal growth. I also love watching and listening to people tap into their characterization on the whim. It’s like a mega IMPROV exercise that I love.
4. Why do you feel an activity like this is important during these times?
We cannot let the performing arts die. Broadway is shut. Theatre isn’t happening. BUT - performers haven’t gone anywhere. We need to keep working out our chops.
We are also in a time of contemplation. Much to think about. I love that plays can provoke those thoughts and get us talking. We need to be talking. Sitting in our quarantined house will not grow our minds. This is a platform will create the necessary conversations.
5. Do you personally have anything else coming up?
I am teaching Magnetic U’s Audition Submission Class! I am super excited to help ease the stressors of the digital audition process.
