5 Questions With Writer and Performer Cameron Davis About The Jingler

We’re gearing up for our next show, The Jingler, written and performed by Cameron Davis on September 19th at 7 pm. We reached out to Cameron recently to talk to him about this dark comedy.

1. What inspired you to write The Jingler?

Most people know at least one jingle, yet no one knows who writes them. There has to be some creative person behind these iconic jingles! As an artist, that seemed so frustrating to me. A song that millions of people come into contact with and enjoy, yet the artist who created these catchy tunes is left in obscurity. Knowing the pressure, the tribulations, and the triumphs of the creative process, I thought this would be a great concept for the dark comedy that became The Jingler.

2. What’s your favorite part about being involved with The Magnetic Theatre?

The Magnetic is a beautiful space and a staple of the Asheville theatre community. The theatre's willingness to explore different genres and styles of performance sets it apart. As an audience member myself, it's exciting that their programming allows for anything and everything that the community has to offer. It's dynamic and warm and it feels like home. Thank you, The Magnetic Theatre, for being so awesome!

3. What do you hope audiences will be left thinking about after seeing The Jingler?

The Jingler seeks out to humanize the creative process and open a discussion about art and the artist. Behind every piece of art, there is an artist, a person, a human being. I'd like audiences to leave thinking about their relationship to art. I hope they think about the artist behind the art they are consuming and how special their motivation to even create art really is. And if they get a new jingle stuck in their head, well that would be nice too.

4. What is your favorite line from The Jingler and why?

The main character Paul mutters to himself 'Shit, shit, shit' in a moment of frustration. I like this line because the world has been tough recently for everyone. I assume if you're reading this, you've experienced a similar sentiment in the last six months. The arts are an important escape and I hope this play gives you a necessary moment of reprieve.

5. What have you found to be the biggest challenge when creating content to stream virtually versus for a live performance?

When there is a live audience, there is an inherent dynamic element. I am there on stage, you are there in the audience. You hold your pee in and wait for an opportune moment to get up and grab a snack from concessions. I am nervous to perform and excited to hear your laughter. We are together. The challenge for me was to create that same feeling at home. I hope you make a special evening for yourself. Put on some pants, light some candles, pour yourself a beverage, because I will be on the other side of town performing as if you were right there in front of me.
