An Interview With Wandering With Magnetic Actor Paula O'Brien

Meet Paula O'Brien! She will be joining us for our next production, Wandering With Magnetic: something i cared about which follows the story of Alyx and Dru, as it unfolds throughout their lives, performed along the Reed Creek Greenway.

Audiences will walk the trail and see scenes of the same couple, played by a different pair of actors in each scene. We reached out to Paula to tell us a bit about herself and about what her experience has been like during this production.

1. Do you relate to your character? How similar/different are you?

I relate to Alyx in how organized and determined they are.  Without giving our scene away (that got you wondering, huh!?) I am different from them in their long term life goals around children and what they are prepared to go through to (hopefully) achieve them.

2. What's your favorite line in this show? Why?

I can’t find it exactly but basically life is short so you may as well enjoy it, or maybe I’m projecting.  Either way, it’s a great philosophy.

3. What is one thing you’d be willing to give up for someone else?

The 10 year old in me screams “I DON’T WANNA GIVE UP ANYTHING” but the adult in me would be willing to have a conversation about the issue, how it affects the other and how we can deal with it.  Oh man, this question is opening up a whole Pandora’s box of issues, let’s move on....... 😳

4. What are the biggest challenges of this rehearsal process?

Initially the zoom meetings were great to see/meet the rest of the cast, then it was just Jason, Kay and myself for our scene.  But getting together in person (masked, distanced) is priceless.  After our first in person rehearsal I was reminded of the importance of layering.

5. What makes this experience special for you?

Like a lot of us, I have been isolating for close to a year now.  I was in the last production at the Magnetic when we all went into lockdown last year, Traitor, so to be involved with the Magnetic again for the first in person theatrical event seems right.

6. How did you get into theatre?

Moved to a new town in New Jersey about 13 years ago and didn’t know anyone.  Saw a notice for auditions at the local community theater and followed up on my childhood dream.  Been having a ball ever since.
