A Few Questions with Algorithm & Blues: A Dating Sketch Show Actor Evan Eckstrom

Algorithm & Blues: A Dating Sketch Show opens March 4th, 2022! This show will be an uproarious evening poking fun at the trials and tribulations of modern dating, featuring live music, bad date stories, and dancing Yentas!

We reached out to Evan with a few questions about himself and his experience working on this production.

1. Share your best or worst date experience!

A high school crush from a town over came into my Starbucks in Boston as a young 20's something. We arranged a doubledate for me to join them and another couple at a Tufts University party. Got there to the dark basement of a frat to immediately run into her well-formed classmate... awkward intros exchanged - I went to the beer zone to get us some PBRs from a warm keg. Unfortunately all beer was reserved for "chicks" so I pointedly took a swig of my back up flask. Went back to find my date grinding with JT from bio class. Gave an honest effort to casually dance with them, but once the making out commenced I gave up. Approached the other couple to at least salvage a hang out on the evening - they were making out against a wall even grosslier. Drained my flask and made for the door, BUT  before I got across the gross basement a flying solo cup of PBR slammed corner first into the back of my head! The impact was such that the contents volcanoes strait up and dumped right over me. I snagged my hoodie from the coat couch and caught the last bus of the night back to my side of town. Halfway thru the busride I realize the hoodie was not mine and that I had left a one-of-a-kind painted sweatshirt that my friend had made me in that baloney house on Tufts campus... We didn't set up a second date.

2. Do you relate to any of your characters or to any character in the show? How similar / different are you?

I relate to Mac the Apple in that I do NOT know how to dirty talk.

3. What's your favorite line in the show? Why?

"Kill Me! I've been saying that for years!" Christine's portrayal of Harriet is the right kind of cynical for my taste. It's marvelous.

4. What are the top 5 songs on your date night playlist?

The Seed 2.0 - The Roots & Cody Chestnut

All You Need Is Drums To Start A Dance Party - Piebald

Sweet November - SZA

Kick Your Game - TLC

Champagne and Reefer - Devil Makes Three

5. What's your favorite sketch comedy show / podcast / local group?

Love Whitest Kids U Know. RIP Trevor.

6. What are your go-to first date (or date night) plans?

Hard to pass up a coffee shop meet for low pressure conversation-based date. Also it's telling to watch a potential partner handle a flaky buttery messy croissant.

7. How did you get into theatre?

3rd grade revue I passed up the role of Peter Pan in "I won't Grow Up" I've been vying for the limelight ever since.

8. How is working with The Magnetic different from working with other theatres?

The folks at Magnetic welcomed me in readily! It is different for me in that it's the first theater I've worked with since leaving Boston, but it is certainly warmer so far than established theaters I found there.

9. What's your favorite type of apple?

Granny Smith cuz it goes great with goat cheese and walnuts on a salad!

10. Do you have any upcoming projects that we should check out?

Not yet!
